So what do you do when an internationally known TV show approaches you to offer you millions of dollars to shoot a few months of episodes? You think about how this will affect you in the streets. According to Nicki Minaj, that is. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nicki admitted to being hesitant about taking a seat on the judges panel of American Idol because she didn’t want lose her thug credit.

As an artist signed to Cash Money Records — home to her mentor Lil Wayne, Drake, Jay Sean and DJ Khaled and a label that has sold more than 78 million albums since its founding in 1991 — she points to “a judgmental culture in hip-hop,” where “sometimes you are afraid of being too famous because it’s almost, like, is that even cool? Being that accessible, someone you see on TV every week? I never pictured myself as that type of person. I’m still surprised that I decided to do it.”

Well, I guess she looked at that check and decided to go for the money. To be honest, I think Nicki‘s street cred was kinda on a downhill slide anyway, with her over-the-top rap style. At least to me. I could deal with her at first and actually dug some of her raps, but now it’s all cartoon-y and campy. I’ll pass. This American Idol run may actually help her gain some fans in other people. Guess time will tell. The new season of American Idol premieres on Wednesday, January 16th at 8 PM Eastern.
