A New Dawn

Dawn Richard has bounced back from the smoldering disaster that was Danity Kane‘s comeback with her dignity and career intact. (Which is more than Aubrey O’Day and Shannon Bex can say). She returns to the solo grind with a typically interesting and progressive electro-R&B anthem “Blow” - the first taste of her sophomore LP Blackheart (due January 15).

The 31-year-old also unveiled the video today (October 29) and it’s a arty affair that showcases Dawn’s unique visual approach. “The imagery and focus of this record is an introduction to the [Heart] movement and what it stands for,” she says in regards to her fans and collaborators. “In a time where numbers and stats matter, we simply don’t give a fuck if you like us. We are here. We are strong and we are beautifully imperfect.” Fair enough! See the alt-R&B diva’s album cover after the jump.

Mark Ronson Announces “Uptown Funk” Single, Featuring Bruno Mars

Mark Ronson Bruno Mars

It looks like the collaborative magic between Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson didn’t end with Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox cuts like "Locked Out of Heaven" and “Gorilla.” This morning UK producer Ronson tweeted out a tease for “Uptown Funk,” the lead single from his upcoming fourth album, and noted that the song features Mars.

A release date of November 10 appears on a poster image Mark included in the tweet, which you can catch below.

THIS IS FOR THE 1st SINGLE FROM MY NEW ALBUM. IT FEATURES @BrunoMars. CAN’T WAIT FOR U TO HEAR IT. HERE’S THE POSTER pic.twitter.com/kY5tYo60xC

Following that, he produced tracks for Lil Wayne, Duran Duran, Paul McCartney and, of course, Bruno Mars.

Lorde Covers ‘Billboard,’ Talks Working With Kanye West For ‘Mockingjay – Part 1′ Soundtrack

lorde-billboard

Lorde talks how she took charge of the third Hunger Games soundtrack in Billboard‘s November issue - highlighting the meetings, cold calls and the artistic risks. She emphasizes that she wouldn’t have been satisfied with making an EP, as suggested by Lionsgate - the Hollywood studio behind the franchise. She also says that with Mockingjay - Part 1, she fulfilled a personal career goal of hers. "I’d really wanted to A&R a record," she says to Billboard. "And I basically got to do that."

All of this helps to portray Lorde as a singular artist, someone who would actually pair The Chemical Brothers with Miguel (“This Is Not a Game”) and feature Q-Tip, Pusha T, HAIM and herself on the same song. What’s also memorable is how she revealed that yes, she still gets nervous. "I’m the worst person ever at talking to people I don’t know on the phone — I can’t even order pizza,” Lorde says of reaching out to personal idol Kanye West. “I would put off calling him. I’d say, it’s 12:57, I’ll do it at 1.”

Iggy Azalea’s Sex Tape Might Be Real, Ex-Boyfriend Hefe Wine Claims His Computer Was “Stolen”

iggy-azalea-600x450

News broke yesterday that a sex tape featuring Iggy Azalea was being shopped to porn company Vivid Entertainment. The rap diva vehemently denied appearing in the video in a string of stinging tweets but today (September 12) her legal team confessed that it might be her but she wasn’t aware it was being filmed and was probably underage when it was made. Gross.

Not so, says ex-boyfriend Hefe Wine. He came forward to confirm the tape’s existence and the fact that he “stars” in it with Iggy. He also denied claims that she was a minor, saying she was 18-year-old when they met. The rapper also professes the tape was stolen from his computer and somehow ended up on the desk of Vivid head honcho Steven Hirsch. He is, however, willing to accept money for its release. Sounds like a great guy. See the hitmaker’s outraged tweets after the jump.

Here are Iggy’s tweets on the matter. Her legal team has since changed their position. She hasn’t commented.

Beyonce Quashes Pregnancy Rumors By Showing Off Her Bangin’ Bikini Body: 4 Pics

beyonce-bikini-4

The internet exploded with talk that Beyonce was pregnant with a second child when Jay Z allegedly dropped the bombshell during an On The Run tour stop in Paris, France over the weekend. He was reported as switching the lyrics of Magna Carta Holy Grail interlude “Beach Is Better” from "I replace it with another one" to "cause she's pregnant with another one". (The audio isn’t exactly convincing).

In true Bey style, she refuted the baby talk not by holding a press conference or jumping on Twitter but by showing off her toned tummy in a series of scorching hot Tumblr posts. The 33-year-old rocked a tiny string bikini (and gold leaf tattoos) on her luxury yacht somewhere off the coast of France. It goes without saying that she looked completely and utterly amazing. See the sexy pics after the jump.

Cher Loves Lady Gaga’s Jazz Album, Lady Gaga Thinks Cher Has Class: See Their Twitter Love-In

cher-lady-gaga

Remember when Lady Gaga and Cher recorded “The Greatest Thing” (it actually lived up to its title!) for the legendary diva’s Closer To The Truth LP but then it got ditched at the last minute because Mother Monster wasn’t happy with the fact that it sounded like the best song never to win Eurovision? Well, that mess is all in the past! The gay icons have made up and showed a lot of love for each other on Twitter yesterday (September 15).

It turns out someone sent Cher a copy of Lady Gaga’s jazz LP with Tony Bennett and she really liked what she heard. “SO F-ING PROUD OF U #GAGA HEARD (&SAW) AMAZING CD COLAB #CheekToCheek W/4 EVER HIP #TONYBENNETT BABE, UR CHANNELING JAZZ GREATS & KIL-N-ME,” the “Woman’s World” singer tweeted. (If you’re unfamiliar with Cher-speak that translates as “I enjoyed your album”). The ARTPOP pioneer was quick to return the love and even demanded her fans trend #MonstersLoveCher. See their cute exchange after the jump.

Beyonce Continues To Slay Social Media With Her Stunning Bikini Pics

beyonce-bikini-1

Beyonce is celebrating her birthday (and the end of the blockbuster On The Run tour) with a well-earned beach vacation in Europe. The prolific diva, who is rumored to be working on a joint LP with husband Jay Z, has kindly been uploading snaps from her glamorous getaway. Including plenty of eye-popping bikini pics that showcase her taunt, non-pregnant tummy.

The game-changing diva added more pics to her ever-growing holiday album today (September 17), treating fans to another sexy bikini pic taken on her luxury yacht. Bey also shared some cute beach snaps with Blue Ivy, which are pretty much adorable. What did we do before Beyonce’s Tumblr? See more pics of Queen Bey and and her beautiful baby after the jump.

Charli XCX Covers ‘Complex’, Talks Past Music Biz Struggles

Complex Charli XCX magazine cover

For their latest cover subject, Complex chose singer, songwriter and all around cool-as-hell hit-maker Charli XCX. We’re in the lead-up to the release of the “Boom Clap” artist’s sophomore LP Sucker (out October 21), and Complex spent a full day talking to Charli basically about the path that brought her to this point in her career - including the despair she felt after penning Icona Pop‘s global smash “I Love It.”

"I got shut out of the process and pushed away from that song," she tells the publication, referring to her management at the time, not Icona Pop. "I didn't get the credit I deserved."

She then adds that she felt the pressure from label execs to bang out more hits after achieving her first one: "’We want 'I Love It' meets '212.' Replicate this’… I can't do that! I can't replicate it because I genuinely have no idea how I wrote that song."

Another interesting bit comes when Charli takes a stance on how female artists are perceived in the industry and by the public: "There's always a catch. Like: 'Does she really do that? I heard her mum wrote that song.' I read that about Lorde. I'm like: As if! Just because she's young and successful, why is someone trying to take that away from her? It's because she's highly intelligent and a female who's killing it. She's doing something different, and people are afraid of that."

Just don’t expect her to get into any beefs with her female peers, Azealia Banks-style, though. "Just 'cause we all have vaginas doesn't mean that we all play against each other,” Charli tells Complex. “We're all doing our own thing."

Kanye West Reportedly Wants To Work With Lorde

lorde-kanye

Lorde will never be a royal…but perhaps she’s down with being a God?

According to a new item today in Page Six (so go ahead and take this one with a heavy grain of salt), rapper/media fixation Kanye West is reportedly eying a collaboration with the Pure Heroine brooding alt-pop songstress.

From Page Six:

Kanye West is back from his concert dates in Australia and is about to start recording with Lorde, sources tell Page Six. After his headline-grabbing appearance in Sydney, West touched down in LA on Tuesday with Kim Kardashian and baby North and is ready to head back into the studio with the edgy female artist. Music industry sources say it makes sense for West and Lorde to record together - she has cited the rapper as an influence and covered his songs on tour, including "Flashing Lights" and the "Yeezus" track "Hold My Liquor." Their reps didn't get back to us.

While the credibility of the report is highly questionable (also, we’ve been closely following the progress of Kanye’s upcoming Yeezus follow-up and heard nothing of a Lorde collabo yet!), we can’t say the idea isn’t at least intriguing.

After all, they’ve both been very outspoken regarding celebrity, popular culture and media sensationalism in interviews (and on-stage rants) - perhaps they’d have some interesting things to say together on record? And, as Page Six reports, Lorde is a fan. A major one. At one point, she said that Kanye was "like my school principal, if the school is pop.”

So, what do you think? Should Kanye West and Lorde link up in the studio? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Jack Antonoff Compares Taylor Swift To Michael Jackson, Shades Lady Gaga & Katy Perry

Happier Times?

Katy Perry fun. Grammy Awards Grammys

Taylor Swift is real - you know, like the King Of Pop. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry? They just make disposable garbage. Or at least so muses fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff in GQ, with which he took part in an interview to promote his new album Strange Desire with side project Bleachers.

Antonoff puts it this way to the men’s publication: “Taylor Swift is cool, because she's the closest thing today that hearkens to Michael Jackson - to great, great pop music. There's a difference between her and Gaga and Katy Perry and Lily Allen and all that. It all feels throwaway, comparatively.”

Interestingly, this very sentiment - the lack of real depth and overall superficiality in pop - is something Lily Allen herself explored recently with her own song “Hard Out Here” and its accompanying music video. Maybe Jack Antonoff didn’t catch that one?

Jack also adds praise for Kanye West in his GQ piece: “I love Yeezus. I think it's one of the coolest-sounding things ever. And I think Taylor Swift is one of the best songwriters ever.”

Ironically, Katy Perry presented Antonoff and the rest of fun. with their Best New Artist award at the Grammys in 2013:

Funny that Jack was the only one from the band to give Katy a hug in the Grammys clip above.

‘American Idol’ Winner Caleb Johnson Announces Self-Titled Debut Album

caleb johnson album

Well, the powers that be over at American Idol wasted no time. Hours after Caleb Johnson was crowned the winner of Season 13 last night (May 21), details of his debut album were announced. The self-titled set will be released August 12 on 19 Recordings/Interscope Records. (Based on the cover, we’ve got ourselves another White Guy With Guitar, but anyone who watched this season knows this guy can wail and that he’s not in that sensi-crooner field.)

The 22-year-old North Carolina native topped the more pop-oriented Jena Irene in last night’s star-studded finale, during which he performed with Kiss and belted out his debut single “As Long As You Love Me” as confetti rained down for the victory. That song, which was written by Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, will appear on his album.

(I still find it endlessly amusing that this guy is penning tracks for Idol contestants.)

Watch Lorde Front Nirvana Reunion For “All Apologies” At Rock Hall Of Fame Induction

lorde nirvana

The 2014 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony took place last night (April 10) at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and the biggest draw was the Nirvana “reunion.” After being inducted by former R.E.M. front man Michael Stipe, the surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, along with the band’s sometime guitarist Pat Smear, reunited to play a handful of songs. To fill in for the late Kurt Cobain, the HOF actually did a really cool thing here, enlisting a bunch of kick-ass ladies to take turns fronting the band.

Legends Joan Jett and Kim Gordon each led a song (“Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Aneurysm,” respectively), guitar goddess St. Vincent handled “Lithium” and Lorde took the stage for “All Apologies,” the closing track off Nirvana’s final album. While you could argue that, on paper, Lorde maybe should’ve been swapped out for someone more experienced, she was up to the task, delivering a wonderfully brooding, faithful version.

Watch Lorde’s rendition of the song and see her tweets following the show below, and for the rest of the Nirvana performances head over to Stereogum.

After the ceremony, the updated Nirvana lineup played a show at the tiny-ass (230-capacity!) metal venue St. Vitus a few subway stops north in Greenpoint - but it must’ve been past Lorde’s bedtime, as she was the only one of the four ladies who didn’t perform there.

Fergie Shares A Topless Video On Instagram. Just Because.

Another day, another pop star stripping off on Instagram. It should be boring by now but nah. The latest exhibitionist is Black Eyed Peas vocalist Fergie. Earlier this year the hitmaker confided that she’s finally working on the follow up to 2006 solo LP The Dutchess, so this is probably just a warning shot that she’s on the way back.

It’s hard to believe this woman is a relatively new mom. Her abs are back to their “Where Is The Love?” glory and she doesn’t appear to have aged a day since 2003. Fergie spends most of the video rolling around in bed, so she obviously gets plenty of rest. Now bring on the new music. The Dutchess still holds up as an exceptional urban-pop album eight years later. See the diva’s sexy antics after the jump.

Are you ready for Fergie’s comeback? Have your say in the comments below.

Sky Ferreira Was Injured At Miley Cyrus’ ‘Bangerz’ Show In Anaheim, Needed 60 Stitches

Sky Ferreira was so excited to be Miley Cyrus‘ opening act for her Bangerz tour stop in Anaheim, California last night (February 20) that she didn’t even notice slicing her leg open on stage after taking a tumble. “I fell during the intro of the 1st song of the set,” she posted on Instagram. “I ended up with 60 stitches & at the hospital for 7 hours.”

“I didn’t even notice the injury until 10 mins after I played bc I had so much fun,” the “You’re Not The One” singer continued. “I just figured it was some blood.” Don’t worry, Sky fans. It’s not that serious. She will survive and soldier on with the tour. “I’m so excited to do the LA show tomorrow (despite the not so cool bandage around my leg).” See her Insta-updates after the jump.

Watch Beyonce Answer Fan Questions In New York City

beyonce q&a nyc

The Queen Holds Court

Beyonce made an appearance at the School of Visual Arts in New York City over the weekend, where she played through her 17 Beyonce videos and then took about 10 minutes to answer fan questions submitted through Instagram. “This is a project that I didn’t think was possible,” she told the crowd before opening up on some of the album’s inspirations and inner workings.

As we noted earlier today (December 23), she admitted she was “terrified” about the release the night it dropped, but she also revealed why she was so open about her personal life on this album. Basically, since becoming a mother, Bey has realized she wants to make music for her, music that represents the complex experience of womanhood. Part of this, Bey noted, was that she no longer feels the need to separate herself into these categories of Beyonce, Mrs. Carter, Sasha, etc. since it’s all a part of one greater experience.

Queen B also shared some interesting tidbits about the logistics of keeping the project under wraps (for instance, she wore an earbud while shooting the videos so that nobody else could hear the songs), and lauded her team for actually pulling it off.

Check it out up top.

Emma Louise Teams Up With Wankelmut For “My Head Is A Jungle”: Listen To The Moody Anthem

As far as bizarre sound experiments go, teaming an Australian indie-pop diva with a German house DJ is probably one of the kookiest I can think of. Happily, it turns out to be a match made in heaven as one listen to “My Head Is A Jungle” proves. Brisbane-based Emma Louise has been generating massive hype for a couple of years before finding commercial success at home with excellent debut album Vs Head Vs Heart.

The singer-songwriter’s gloomy, atmospheric tunes obviously caught the ear of Wankelmut (who scored a number one hit across Europe in 2012 with “One Day/Reckoning Song”) because the 24-year-old added a dance beat and turned the eerie love song into a club smash. After conquering Germany, the unlikely duo is ready to go international with their moody house anthem.

“My Head Is A Jungle” is being serviced to clubs around the globe and could well find love in the US given the current pro-EDM climate. Immerse yourself in their gloomy but danceable world after the jump.

Share your appreciation for this unlikely musical cocktail in the comments below.

Justin Bieber’s Mom Talks Grammy Snub

justin bieber

“It’s my boy. I’m a little biased,” Pattie Mallette says of her son Justin Bieber. When asked for her thoughts on this year’s Grammys — Bieber did not receive a single nomination — she was quick to confess her true opinion. “I think they blew it,” she told Fuse. Mallette echoes Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, who took to Twitter to express his disappointment in December: ” Grammy board u blew it on this one.”

In comparison, Bieber has refused to dwell on the snub. In an interview with Z100, Bieber issued a statement to his fans: “Thank you to all my beautiful fans out there. I don’t need a Grammy to have your love.” In recent days, the Believe singer has been focusing on rehearsals for tomorrow’s Saturday Night Live episode, which will mark the first time he’s hosted the sketch comedy show.

Even before he became the youngest male artist to have five No. 1 albums, and even due to “Boyfriend” alone, Grammy nominations seemed like a given. Alas, what is “Boyfriend” now? Just another pop song that will never win the awards it deserves.

Why do you think Justin Bieber was snubbed from this year’s Grammys? Tell us in the comments below, or on Facebook and Twitter.

Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez Call It Quits

This isn’t the first time there have been rumors of trouble in teen paradise between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, pop’s royal couple (junior edition). But it appears the inevitable has happened. Justin Bieber is “lingse” after all.

E! reports the couple’s split due to their “crazy schedules,” according to “a source.” Generally, we have to watch out for these anonymous “sources” as bringers of legitimate news, but the evidence does indeed suggest that the Biebs, at least, may be moving on.

The “Boyfriend” singer has been spotted out and about with Victoria’s Secret model Barbara Palvin, who tweeted a photo of herself with Justin at the fashion show where he performed, then joined him to see The Lion King on Broadway.

Barbara has denied on Twitter that there’s anything going on between the two, and that might very well be the case. But, guys, if you’re in a relationship, a word of advice: do not pal around with Victoria’s Secret models while your girlfriend is not present.

The fact that Justin is doing just that seems to indicate he and Selena are no more. Selena retweeted a pic of of Barbara and Justin with the caption “….” that has since been deleted.

However, we await confirmation from the two stars themselves. E! has a pretty extensive breakdown of the couple’s recent tweets, should you care to read into this all a little further. People also confirms the story.
