Retro Soul Diva Realness

Jessica Mauboy is currently heating up the charts in Australia with new Babyface-penned/produced single “Can I Get A Moment?”. The latest cut from the pop diva’s third LP Beautiful, which is being rereleased on November 21, debuted at number five on the ARIA singles chart after a promo blitz that included a sizzling performance on the finale of X Factor.

The 25-year-old is hoping to build on that momentum by dropping the cute (but familiar) video. “Can I Get A Moment?” obviously draws inspiration from Beyonce‘s “Love On Top” visual, which was a cute reworking of New Edition‘s “If It Isn’t Love” clip. It’s hardly surprising given Jessica’s love for all things Queen Bey and the format fits the song perfectly. Watch up top.

Party Hard!

Calvin Harris dropped a surprise video for R3hab collaboration “Burnin’” this afternoon (October 29) to new LP Motion (due November 4). The Scottish DJ has largely focussed on the album’s star-filled features such as the Ellie Goulding-assisted “Outside” and Gwen Stefani-voiced “Together”, so it’s nice to see one of the instrumental tracks getting some attention.

The visual was filmed at this year’s EDC Las Vegas, which gives it a surprisingly raw quality. You almost feel like you’re in the middle of all those turnt revelers, watching Calvin and his Dutch pal work their magic behind the decks. The video is simple enough but it’s material like this that will keeps clubs/festivals hopping for the next few months, rather than the pop-friendly anthems. Watch up top.

Beyonce And Jay Z Debut “Bang Bang, Part One” From ‘On The Run Tour’: Watch

beyonce-jay-z-on-the-run

After capping off their highly successful, endlessly headline-generating On The Run Tour in Paris, Beyonc and Jay Z are still finding new ways to bring their vision to fans, beginning with Part One of Bang Bang, a mini-film shot in support of their tour.

Today, the superstar duo debuted the first piece of the visual, directed by photographer/filmmaker Dikayl Rimmasch. Inspired by “French new wave cinema and the powerful intimacy of legendary independent director and mentor Les Blank,” the captivating clip sees the two hitting the dusty trail for some high-speed car rides (and a quick diner stop) in the vintage 2-minute clip - and yes, there’s an underlying meaning to this duo’s Bonnie & Clyde-esque styling.

From the NOWNESS interview with the director: “In my first conversation on the telephone with Jay Z he explained his concept of On the Run. He said: ‘We're not trying to do this literally, it's not that we're Bonnie and Clyde. We're on the run from everything. On the run from becoming a clich . On the run from doing the same thing again.’ Everything he mentioned was a level of consciousness he has for staying alive as an entertainer and as a human being. He wanted to keep it more abstract because for him it was very abstract. How do you stay new, not just to your audience but also yourself?”

What do you think of Bang Bang so far? Let us know in the comments below.

Lykke Li Unveils “Gunshot” Video: Watch

Shot An Arrow

Lykke Li staggers through a parking lot in her "Gunshot" video, directed by Fleur and Manu. One moment she’s slowly walking forward, the next her body convulses - and the other people in the parking lot all react differently to her behavior. One man peers over her shoulder to see if she’s alright. Boys circle around and push her around like grade school bullies. A much younger boy mimes shooting her, while a group of twerking girls pay her no mind.

"Gunshot" is off Lykke Li’s third album I Never Learn, which completes the loose trilogy that started with Youth Novels and 2011′s Wounded Rhymes. Surprisingly, she wrote the song after a mediation session. "[T]he words just came out kind of violent words," she said to The Guardian. "So this is also the moment in, in a relationship where you've fucked up and some things you can never take back. I think that a lot of people can relate to that moment where it's just gone forever.”

Justin Thorne’s “The Heartbroken”: Go Behind The Scenes Of The Former NLT Member’s New Music

Justin Thorne The Heartbroken behind the scenes video

Justin Un-Breaks His "Heart"

Glee‘s Kevin McHale and singer-songwriter Travis Garland may currently be the biggest names to emerge from the ashes of short-lived, late ’00s boy band NLT, but it’s time to get fellow former member Justin Thorne on your pop radar. Johnny Wright, manager of Justin Timberlake, has guided Thorne’s career through a previous stint with another boy band (One Call) and, now, down the path of solo stardom.

“I wanted to create world and tell the story of a breakup I had gone through,” Justin says of his upcoming material. “[New single] ‘The Heartbroken’ is the first part of that story.”

Above, Thorne discusses his first solo project, while clips from the video for “The Heartbroken” are revealed.

The single will be officially released on June 10. Hear it in full over at KIIS FM’s site, and get an early taste of Justin’s new music by watching the video above!

Kylie Minogue’s “Crystallize”: Watch The Video For The Cancer Charity Single

Kylie Minogue Crystallize music video

Shiny!

You won’t find Kylie Minogue‘s new song “Crystallize” on her recently-released album Kiss Me Once, but you will see all the names of those who donated to One Note For Cancer at the end of the clip. The track is a tie-in with the cancer charity, and Kylie got fans involved by having them bid on eBay for one of all 4408 notes contained in “Crystallize.” The final three minutes of the video show the generous bidders’ names scrolling by.

In the first bit of the visual, however, we see not one diva, but two, as Kylie appears as a guardian pop angel of sorts, watching over a young girl who twirls around her bedroom doing the old hairbrush/microphone schtick. It’s of course a far more toned-down video than Kylie’s recent sensual clips for "Into The Blue" and “Sexercize.”

Minogue worked on “Crystallize” with Dev Hynes and Babydaddy of Scissor Sisters. Pity the track didn’t make the cut for Kiss Me Once, as its upbeat vibe and positive lyrics would have worked perfectly when sandwiched in with the rest of the set.

Still, 2014 has proven to be quite prolific for the Aussie songbird - we’ve gotten the LP, two official singles so far (“Into The Blue” and “I Was Gonna Cancel”), the buzz video for “Sexercize and, now, this non-album track, to boot.

Keep it coming, Kylie!

Miley Cyrus & Future Stare Lovingly At Each Other In Space For “Real And True” Video: Watch

miley cyrus future real and true

Cosmic Love

And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for: Miley Cyrus portraying Future‘s naked alien love interest in the “Real And True” video. And, well, when it comes to intergalactic interspecies love stories, we definitely prefer Katy Perry‘s “E.T.”

In this Rankin-directed video, Future discovers the glittery-skinned extraterrestrial passed out on a moon-like surface (presumably suffering exhaustion from too much space-twerking), and she is brought onto Future’s ship, where he takes a liking to her. The majority of the visual comprises the two pop weirdos staring longingly at each other, as Mr. Hudson pretty much just third-wheels it in his role as Astronaut #2.

Mike WiLL Made It Talks Miley Cyrus, Musical Beginnings & Ciara’s Next Album

Mike WiLL Spills The Beans

Hip-hop beatmaker du jour Mike WiLL Made It dropped by Power 105.1 for a radio interview this morning to promote new single “23″. He also chatted about Miley Cyrus (the pop diva doesn’t take twerking seriously and has some big surprises in store for us on Bangerz), his musical family and dropped a bombshell by announcing that he’s already working on Ciara‘s next album.

Wait a minute. Isn’t CiCi just getting around to releasing the second cut (ie. “Overdose”)? Oh well, at least Mike has the R&B siren’s back. When one of the presenters labelled her LP a flop, he pointed out that “Body Party” was a hit and said: “shout out to Ciara she real talented”. Watch up top.

Is it wise for Ciara to release another album so soon? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

St. Lucia Bring Some Tropical Flavor To The Sonos Studio With “Closer Than This”: Watch

St. Lucia Conquer The Sonos Studio

St. Lucia premiered their much-anticipated debut album When The Night with an exclusive showcase at the Sonos Studio in Los Angeles last week. The high-energy set was preceded by a Q&A session with frontman Jean-Philip Grobler, which set the evening’s relaxed, vaguely exotic tone.

The band then wowed with superb renditions of new tracks and old favorites alike. Highlights included tropical-pop stormer “September”, moody buzz track “Too Close” and effervescent single “Elevate”. Another treat was “Closer Than This”, which has been on high rotation at Idolator HQ since featuring on St. Lucia’s first EP. Watch their brilliant performance up top.

Watch Ariana Grande Rap Along To Big Sean’s “Guap”

ariana grande guap cover

Grande Gettin' Guap Right Now

We already knew Ariana Grande had a killer voice. What we didn’t know is that she’s apparently a hip-hop nerd and likes to take a few runs on the mic. The pint-sized singer recently appeared on Power 106′s Big Boy's Neighborhood, and she rapped along to a couple minutes of Big Sean‘s “Guap.” Grande was a little rusty, but when she got her bearings straight, girl had some flow! (Even though her crew totally abandoned her on the hook.) Also, she hilariously does the G.O.O.D. Music MC’s “God, oh God” ad libs at the beginning of the track.

Check it out up top.

Maybe she didn’t need Mac Miller‘s mailed-in verse on “The Way” after all…

Lily Allen Saves Pop Music With New Single “Hard Out Here”: Watch The Brilliant Video

lily-allen-hard-out-here

She Makes It Look Easy

Just when everyone thought that there was no hope left for pop music in 2013, with generally lackluster releases from all the best divas in the game, Lily Allen comes through in a pinch to rescue all of us from abject desperation: Without any formal announcement, build-up or fanfare, the songstress has just unveiled the music video for her new single “Hard Out Here” online - and it’s effortlessly brilliant, as sharp and dynamic as any of us could want.

Allen has always been one of the few pop stars who’s capable of solid social satire without compromising her songcraft, and “Hard Out Here” doesn’t disappoint to that end: It’s a withering takedown of body image pressures and misogyny in the entertainment industry, making its point flawlessly with just a few choice lines and images. “Hard Out Here” is self-conscious and self-deprecating but stops just short of being caustic, built around an earworm of a chorus hook with typically smart, funny lyrics in the verses.

The video opens with Allen, in full glam-chav style (looking like Jessie J, frankly) getting liposuction, and it just gets better from there, borrowing imagery from rap videos to ingenious effect. (It’s not far off from Jewel‘s “Intuition” video, but dangerously more effective.) In particular, her take on Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” video - with balloon letters spelling out “LILY ALLEN HAS A BAGGY PUSSY” - is laugh-out-loud funny.

“Hard Out Here” is maybe her most damning song yet - and it’s all but impossible to dislike. This is how you make a comeback.

Watch up top.

Solange Turns A Mini-Mall Into A Disco For “Lovers In The Parking Lot” Video: Watch

Get In The Groove

“Lovers In The Parking Lot,” arguably the best song off Solange‘s great True EP, finally gets an official music video. In the clip (which she co-directed), the singer shows off her signature two-step dance moves and her glorious Diana Ross-inspired curls while dressed in colorful, space-agey getups - peep her light-up sneakers! It all goes down after dark in a suburban mini-mall in Houston, where Big TymersMannie Fresh and Bun B make surprise appearances.

In addition to forming her own label, Saint Records, Solange is planning to release her third studio album next year. She revealed that indie artists like Sampha (Drake, Jessie Ware), Dave Longstreith (The Dirty Projectors) and Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift) have been involved in the songwriting process.

Girls Aloud’s “Beautiful Cause You Love Me”: Hear The New Ballad

Girls Aloud Beautiful Cause You Love Me Lyric Video

Beautiful Robots

Iconic British girl group Girls Aloud have moved full swing into their big reunion, with lead single “Something New” making a major splash in the band’s native UK. Now, they’re continuing the charge with the second single from their upcoming greatest hits collection Ten, a track titled “Beautiful Cause You Love Me,” which they debuted earlier today (November 13) via a lyric video. The song is a change of pace for the band, who haven’t released a ballad as a single in several years - and it may not be exactly what their core fans are looking for if they’re thirsting for something, um, new.

british invasion 3.0: see the hottest acts

14 Photos »All 22 of Girls Aloud’s singles have been produced by the critically acclaimed production house Xenomania; “Beautiful” is their first ever to feature another creative team at the helm. In this case, it’s Jim Eliot, who recently produced much of Ellie Goulding‘s last album Halcyon. The track is also a ballad, which were never Girls Aloud’s forte, and while it’s a more than serviceable effort - the lyrics, in particular, are striking and memorable - it’s slightly drearier than their typically exhilarating uptempos. The production starts off spare then surges into melodramatic territory, dragging in its final minute. Even if it’s ultimately effective, the self-embracing message of the song is nowhere near as thrilling as their more inventive concepts.

In short: “Beautiful” may not rival Girls Aloud’s best work, but it’s not a complete disappointment.

Pharrell Talks Breaking Into Music On ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’

Pharrell On 'Jimmy Fallon'

He's No N.E.R.D.

Here’s what’s most important: When Pharrell appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night in promotion of his book, Places and Spaces I’ve Been, he did not talk about what he’s been doing in the studio with Miley Cyrus and Tyler The Creator. He did, however, talk about his experience breaking into the music industry, and acted totally passe when Fallon showed a picture of Pharrell chilling with Jay-Z and Frank Ocean. Because that’s normal, or whatever.

Admittedly, Pharrell seemed fairly cagey in the interview, focusing the discussion squarely on his new book and a few odd stories - like the time when Diddy told him that he was destined to be a star. Also look out for Pharrell’s discussion of Diddy’s various names. It’s priceless. Watch the video up top.

Brandy’s “Wildest Dreams” Video: Watch The Sultry Clip

Brandy

Wild Ones

Having already “Put It Down” once or twice, Brandy‘s now turning it up in the clip for her newest single, “Wildest Dreams,” a soul-soaked R&B midtempo that oozes longing. B-Rocka keeps it simple in the video, though, intercutting chic black-and-white solo shots with footage of Brandy performing on stage, flanked by dancers.

What’s surprising is how effectively Brandy works out that choreography: Wearing high-waisted shorts and looking like she’s about 80% legs, Brandy shows she can still pop with the best of ‘em. It’s clean and elegant (if likely shot on a budget), and neatly shows why Two Eleven is one of the strongest releases of the year. Even with crazy competition, Brandy still does R&B better than the rest.

The Killers’ “Miss Atomic Bomb” Video: Watch The Explosive Tour Footage

the killers miss atomic bomb

On Tour With The Killers

The Killers premiered their video for Battle Born single “Miss Atomic Bomb,” featuring footage of the band on tour in the UK. Giorgio Testi shot much of the festival performance footage in slow-mo, giving it that added dramatic flair that fits with the band’s MO. We also get to see the gang doing behind-the-scenes band stuff like tweaking set lists, signing autographs and staring up at the sky tour bus ceiling. Also? SHIRTLESS BRANDON FLOWERS!
