PSY To Bring “Gangnam Style” Swag To The Oxford Union

By this point in his brief but illustrious career, K-pop sensation PSY has graced some pretty major stages - but according to a new report, he’s set to embark on a new, even odder chapter than becoming a worldwide pop sensation. BBC News reports that PSY will be addressing the famed (and incredibly prestigious) debating society The Oxford Union on November 7, where he will be discussing “the hype and excitement surrounding the single’s ‘horse-riding’ dance craze.” A spokesman from the Union called it a great opportunity to hear from someone “topical and current.”

“We’re expecting the chamber to be full to capacity to hear what Psy [sic] has to say,” he elaborated. “It’s great for our members to be able to welcome someone who has had a huge impact on life in such a short space of time.” Sure, okay. Expect to see a lot of very confused-looking distinguished people on November 7 in Oxford.

K-pop superstar PSY is on the cover of Billboard this month, showing his "Gangnam Style" in a lime green blazer and his signature bow tie. In the cover story, excerpted online, PSY explains that he was clear about not wanting to assimilate into American culture too readily: “The basic principle I have is that what is most Korean is what is the most international,” he explained. “I don’t want to come here and act like I’m an American. I want to showcase the dynamic potential Korea has, and I want to prove that as an artist.”

While PSY’s still-untitled next single, reportedly to be performed in English, is set for a November release, the “Gangnam” invasion shows no sign of slowing - yet - and the Billboard story just cements his role in the cultural consciousness.

If anything was going to cement K-pop star Psy‘s video for “Gangnam Style” as a viral hit, it had to be this. Britney Spears tweeted her enthusiasm for “Gangnam Style” earlier this week, so when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday in anticipation of Wednesday night’s Season 2 premiere of The X Factor, there was a special surprise awaiting her: Psy was on hand to teach Spears his signature dance moves. (Obviously, Ellen joined in too.) And although Spears has taken some heat lately for lackluster dance moves in her tours and videos, in the above clip, she picks up that cowgirl dance pretty quickly.

Psy, meanwhile, is riding high from the success of his recent MTV Video Music Awards performance, signing with Justin Bieber‘s manager Scooter Braun, and the seemingly unstoppable viral traffic of his clip for “Gangnam Style”. Stateside fans are about to get an additional taste of the K-pop invasion when Psy plays a free show in New York City on Friday, September 14 as part of TODAY’s summer concert series.
