thanksgiving...and a sale!

Mmmm...pie! I'm not actually that big on pie, but I think the acorns on that center pie are pretty adorable. (Photo is from a 1955 Women's Home Companion.) We're having pumpkin cheesecake, not pie, but I hope your Thanksgiving holiday is wonderful no matter what you eat.
Because we are so very thankful to our customers and friends, Small Earth Vintage will be having a 15% off sale in the Etsy shop from Friday, November 25 through Monday, November 28.
And just a heads up, we'll be closed from November 30 until December 7. The Etsy shop will be open for purchases, but items will not be shipped until Thursday, December 8.

film fashion: hugo

Andy and I saw Martin Scorsese's Hugo (in 3-D!) this weekend, and we really enjoyed it. It's a charming film that is not just for children (something I was a bit worried about). It's set in 1930s Paris, and naturally, I found myself obsessed with the look of one of the characters: Hugo's young friend, Isabelle.

I'm not sure what it is with me and the clothing young girls wore in the 1930s (see also my post about the film Cracks), but I love it and find it very inspiring. Maybe it's because these girls (at least in the films) don't dress particularly childishly, but rather like young, if quirky, adults. Anyway, Isabelle wears pretty much the same outfit througout the film: beret, striped sweater (boatneck, with buttons at the shoulder), plaid skirt, tweed jacket, and knee socks with brown boots.
I found some Isabelle-esque pieces on Etsy to recreate this look. I might try it myself (well, sans kneesocks)--or at least I will make an effort to start wearing a beret again!

Which is more important…the barber shop or the barber?

My favorite barber Michael recently moved from F.S.C. BARBER Shop in the West Village to Fellow Barber Shop in Soho.As much as I love the environment that F.S.C still suggests, I'm of that classic position of "As my barber goes, so do I."

I haven't gotten my hair cut there yet, but I dropped in the other day to check out the new space. I'm sure the experience will be just as good as always.
